Since 1967, February has been recognized as Black History Month. It is an annual celebration of the achievements and contributions of peoples of African descent to society.

Historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association of the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). The organization devoted its time and efforts to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African Descent. Throughout the years, the group became known as the Association for the study of African American Life and History (ASALH) but their mission remained the same. ASALH continued to sponsor the National Black History Week in 1926. They intentionally choose the second week of February to concur with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
“This event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs, host performances, and lectures.” (History.com, 2010, Paras. 4)
This month is an opportunity for unity and a chance to support African- American and Black businesses. You can do this by shopping at local black owned businesses in your area.
